Duo the Sick aka Frankie Flowers

On a crisp, cool evening in Oklahoma City after the Thunder fell to the L.A. Clippers at the Ford Center I had the pleasure of watching one of the most lyrically gifted emcees to ever touch down in our budding metropolis.  Killah Priest of Wu-Tang fame ended his 30 date tour at the Conservatory joined by members of the Oklahoma hip hop organization “Puzzle People.”

I can’t lie, I was disappointed with the turn out, I know Sundays are rough for working people, but c’mon son…It was Killah Priest!  Whether it be promotion or lack of interest that had the club barely full, it is still good to see the people I see at most shows I’m at, and it has me wishin’ I could be at them all.  Maybe my five to fifteen dollars won’t make a difference in the long run, but I don’t ever want to think I didn’t try.

Jabee, J. Poe, Chop Chop & more defend OKC Rap/RnB

by McNastee on Oct.15, 2009, under Music, Music Biz, Stuff I Like

What’s incredible about this video to me is they don’t know who they are really talking to.  This guy presents himself as an A&R or talent scout, but for real is probably a janitor for ITT tech.  This is admirable to me because I believe whether its the lowest of the low end sleazy record label owner or someone from the pinacle of the music industry machine would most likely get the same response.

Thanks to Nitro, I’ve been in the company of people like Dave Lighty and Paul Cantor who have come to Oklahoma City looking and listening for something that could blow up out of Oklahoma.  The music is here, it’s great, it is ours, I was listening to “Must Be Nice” today on my way home thinking, “wow, there’s so much good music coming out of my tiny state, that I don’t have to listen to anything else if I don’t want to.”  I understand the emotion, where everyone is coming from, because they are my neighbors and they live the same life in the same place I do.

Maybe it’s not time for us yet.

The music is here, it’s ready…I can feel it.

The music industry is just that though, an industry.  The business mentality isn’t here right now and the industry is all about calculated risks.  I don’t know if there is a successful label here with a proven track record of sales, and long gone are the days of discovering the next big thing at a talent show in the middle of the boonies.  If you don’t have Soundscan or BDS numbers you may as well be that person who inevitably tells me “oh my cousin raps too.”

As much as I want someone from Oklahoma to blow up so I can say, “I knew that guy when…” or “Man I did a mixtape cover for him one time,”  I like the hunger and the merit our music still has.  Oklahoma’s hip hop scene is the Louvre and not Allposters.com.  We haven’t yet reached mass consumption status, you can still go out and see, in person, the look, the sound, the vibe, that our artists present.  You’ll regret it later if you don’t now.

I love Oklahoma.  I love hip hop.  I love my fellow artists.

Let’s change the world.

Shows at Sauced Rock!

Shows at Sauced Rock!

I always have a good time at Sauced when there is a show, and since it’s cooling down a little bit, I’m sure the venue will be even more comfortable.

Come check out the show this coming Friday.
